Overview

Geography and cities

Emilia-Romagna stretches along the Via Emilia, the Roman road linking Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna, Imola, Forlì, Cesena and Rimini at the foot of the Apennines; to the north the plain reaches the Po and its delta (Ferrara), to the east Romagna opens onto the Adriatic with Ravenna and the Riviera. Bologna, in the middle, is the rail and motorway hub of all Italy and seat of the oldest university in the Western world.

Economy

The economy is one of the most productive in Europe: Motor Valley (cars and motorcycles in Modena, Bologna, Maranello), machinery and automation, packaging (Bologna), tiles (Sassuolo), biomedical (Mirandola), food (Parma ham and Parmigiano, Modena balsamic vinegar), fashion (Carpi), plus mass beach tourism on the Romagna Riviera and international trade fairs. The employment rate is in Italy's top three and the share of foreign residents among the highest.

Who moves here and languages

Newcomers include industrial and food-sector workers all along the Via Emilia, students in Bologna (one of Italy's leading universities), Parma, Modena and Ferrara, seasonal workers on the Riviera and in agriculture, and foreigners in above-average proportion. Ordinary-statute region, official language Italian; the Emilian and Romagnol dialects have no national protection.
