Overview
What kind of city
Ravenna was the seat of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century and then the centre of Byzantine Italy until the 8th century. From that era survive the eight religious buildings of the 5th and 6th centuries, with their mosaics, inscribed by UNESCO in 1996. Dante Alighieri settled here after 1318 and his tomb is here.
The municipality is very large: besides the urban centre it includes the Darsena, the port along the Candiano canal, the localities of Sant'Alberto, Mezzano, Piangipane, Roncalceci, San Pietro in Vincoli and Castiglione, and nine beach resorts on the Adriatic, from Casalborsetti to Lido di Savio. The territory is divided into ten zones, each with a Territorial Council.
Economy and who it suits
The port of Ravenna is the only seaport in Emilia-Romagna: a multipurpose port handling every type of cargo, described by the Port System Authority as Italy's leader for trade with the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The BW Singapore regasification vessel operates offshore. The University of Bologna's Ravenna campus works on cultural heritage, the environment, law, urban and offshore-systems engineering, materials chemistry and health care.
Who moves here finds a city of art with the sea a few kilometres away; for work, training and guidance there is the Informagiovani office and, for people from other countries, the municipal intercultural network RITI.
