Overview

What kind of city

Piacenza stands on the right bank of the Po, 67 km from Milan, where four regions meet: the official tourism site calls it "the gateway to Emilia" and quotes Leonardo da Vinci, "Piacenza is a land of passage". A Roman colony and a medieval centre, it was the end point of the ancient Via Emilia and is crossed by the Via Francigena. The municipal statute recalls that in 1848, after the plebiscite for annexation to Piedmont, Carlo Alberto proclaimed it the "Firstborn of the Kingdom of Italy" (Primogenita).

Centre, universities, food

The centre's landmarks are Piazza Cavalli, with the Palazzo Gotico and the Farnese equestrian statues, the Cathedral and the Palazzo Farnese, home of the Civic Museums. The university offer is mixed: the Università Cattolica campus, the Politecnico di Milano hub (architecture and mechanical and energy engineering) and the University of Parma campus where Medicine and Surgery is taught. According to the tourism site, the area has the highest concentration of PDO and DOC products in Italy, starting with coppa, salame and pancetta.
