Climate and air: anti-smog restrictions, ecological Sundays and MOVE-IN
From 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 ordinance no. 704/2026 restricts the most polluting vehicles on weekdays, with 20 ecological Sundays and emergency measures based on the Arpae bulletin. Besurica, Montale and Le Mose are excluded because they lack adequate public transport.
Sections: Seasons · Rainfall · Temperatures · Air quality · Environmental hazards
Traffic restrictions
Monday to Friday, from 8:30 to 18:30, petrol and LPG or methane bi-fuel cars up to Euro 2, diesels up to Euro 4 and mopeds and motorcycles up to Euro 2 may not circulate. The Besurica, Montale and Le Mose areas, which lack adequate public transport, are excluded, as are some through roads to car parks and shuttles (such as the southern ring road and the Via Emilia towards Milan); maps are attached to the ordinance. On 20 ecological Sundays, from 4 October 2026 to 28 March 2027, the ban also covers Euro 5 diesels. There are no restrictions on 1 November, 8, 25 and 26 December, 1 and 6 January and 29 March.
Emergencies and exemptions
When Arpae forecasts PM10 exceedances (bulletin on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), the ban runs from 8:00 to 19:00 and extends to Euro 5 diesels that are not Euro 6; slurry spreading is banned across the municipality, as is the use of biomass heaters below "5 stars" where an alternative exists.
Exempt are, among others, electric and hybrid cars, car-pooling cars with the minimum number of passengers, vehicles for people with disabilities holding a permit and for documented medical care. Owners of older vehicles can join MOVE-IN, the regional scheme running until 30 September 2028 that allows an annual mileage tracked by a black box, but not on ecological Sundays or during emergency measures.
