Overview
What kind of city
According to UNESCO, under the Este family Ferrara was a capital of the arts that rivalled Florence and Venice for about two centuries; the Addizione Erculea designed by Biagio Rossetti, begun in 1492, makes it "the first Renaissance city to be developed using a complex urban plan". The historic centre has been on the List since 1995; in 1999 the listing was extended to the Po Delta and the Este villas (Delizie estensi), and in 2015 the Delta became a MAB biosphere reserve.
The Este walls form a green ring of about 9 km, which takes about three hours on foot or an hour and a half by bike; inside, the city is explored on foot or by bicycle.
University and institutions
The University of Ferrara already existed in 1391; Copernicus and Paracelsus studied there. About 28,000 students study there every year, 60% of them from other regions. MEIS, the National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah, which tells over two thousand years of Jewish presence in Italy, is on via Piangipane; Palazzo dei Diamanti hosts major art exhibitions.
