Symbols and territory

The municipal statute (approved in 2003 and last amended in 2019) describes the coat of arms as a shield divided horizontally black and silver, topped by a ducal crown; the banner, divided horizontally white and black, is decorated with the silver medal for valour in the Resistance. Besides the city, the municipality includes a long list of villages (frazioni), among them Aguscello, Cona and Pontelagoscuro. Decentralisation runs through the Circoscrizioni (districts), whose number, names and boundaries are set by a regulation.

The Este

The city's history is that of the Este family, which according to UNESCO made Ferrara for about two centuries a capital of the arts, economics and religion, with artists such as Piero della Francesca and Mantegna in its service. Castello Estense was commissioned in 1385 by Niccolò II d'Este, designed by Bartolino da Novara, after a popular revolt caused by famine. The university already existed in 1391.
