Overview

What kind of city

The historic centre is built around the Cathedral of the Assumption, the Baptistery in pink Verona marble and the Pilotta complex, a former service palace of the Farnese family that now houses the Teatro Farnese, the Galleria Nazionale, the Biblioteca Palatina, the Archaeological Museum and the Bodoni Museum. Parma is known for Giuseppe Verdi and Arturo Toscanini and was Italian Capital of Culture in 2020+21.

Economy and who moves here

UNESCO describes Parma as the gastronomic centre of the "Italian Food Valley": Prosciutto di Parma PDO, Parmigiano Reggiano PDO, Culatello di Zibello PDO and Salame Felino PGI are among the area's products. The city is the seat of EFSA, a European Union agency set up in 2002, and of Fiere di Parma, which organises Cibus; the Barilla group was founded in Parma in 1877.

The University of Parma traces its origins to a grant by Emperor Otto I in 962 and has its 77-hectare science campus in the Parco Area delle Scienze. Who moves here to study or to work in the food sector finds dedicated institutions, companies and degree courses.
