Overview

What kind of city

Rimini was founded by the Romans in 268 BC under the name Ariminum: the Arch of Augustus, the Bridge of Tiberius and the Roman houses of the Domus del Chirurgo survive. In the 15th century Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta had Castel Sismondo built and transformed the Tempio Malatestiano. Federico Fellini came from Rimini, which dedicates the Fellini Museum, spread over three venues, to him.

The city has about 15 kilometres of Adriatic coastline. Across the Bridge of Tiberius, which spans the Marecchia, lies Borgo San Giuliano, an old fishing village.

Economy and who it suits

Besides tourism, Rimini is a trade-fair and congress city: Italian Exhibition Group runs events such as TTG, SIGEP World and TECNA at the Fiera di Rimini and manages the Palacongressi. The University of Bologna campus works on fashion, cosmetics, sport, wellbeing, tourism and business, with half of its courses designed internationally and taught in English.

To get around there is the Metromare, running on a dedicated track between Rimini and Riccione stations, Start Romagna buses and a municipal cycle network that reached 202.6 kilometres in 2026.
