Overview
What kind of city
Forlì was founded by the Romans as Forum Livii in the 2nd century BC; in the historic centre four streets of Roman origin converge on piazza Aurelio Saffi, the main square. Its monuments include the Romanesque basilica of San Mercuriale with its original 12th-century bell tower, the Palazzo Comunale with the Civic Tower and the Palazzo del Podestà. The Ravaldino fortress, completed in 1480, now bears the name of Caterina Sforza. The 20th century left Rationalist buildings from the 1920s and 1930s, from viale della Libertà to piazzale della Vittoria.
The municipality comprises the main town, its neighbourhoods (quartieri) and outlying villages (frazioni); local participation runs through the neighbourhood committees provided for by the Statute.

Luigi Ridolfi airport became Forlì-Ravenna Airport in September 2026, under a protocol signed by the mayors of the two cities.
