Overview

What kind of city it is

Sassari is Sardinia's second city by number of inhabitants and the historic and monumental reference point of the north of the island. The historic centre is medieval in origin: of the 36 towers of the city walls, six survive. On its eastern side open piazza Castello and piazza d'Italia, laid out from 1872, with the building that houses the Metropolitan City; the city's emblem is the Rosello Fountain, from the early 17th century. The municipal coastline includes Platamona beach; the nearest airport, Alghero-Fertilia, is 33 km away.

University and festivals

The University of Sassari originates in the bequest with which, in 1558, Alessio Fontana left his property for a college of studies; in 1617 Philip III granted the Jesuit college the status of royal university, the first in Sardinia. Today it has eleven departments and sites also in Alghero, Olbia, Nuoro and Oristano.

The city calendar has two big events: the Cavalcata Sarda, mainly on the penultimate Sunday of May, and the Descent of the Candelieri on 14 August, inscribed since 2013 on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.
