Visiting Sassari: historic centre, Rete Thamus, Monte d'Accoddi, Platamona

The historic centre is walked between the Rosello Fountain, San Nicola cathedral, piazza Castello and piazza d'Italia; the «G. A. Sanna» Museum documents Sardinian civilisation from prehistory. The Comune groups eleven sites in the Rete Thamus, including the pre-Nuragic altar of Monte d'Accoddi. In summer, Platamona beach; arrival from Alghero airport by ARST bus.

  • Rosello Fountain: a late-Renaissance fountain from the early 17th century, the city's emblem.
  • San Nicola cathedral: recognisable by its vertical, composite façade.
  • Piazza d'Italia: laid out from 1872, with the statue of Victor Emmanuel II by Giuseppe Sartorio at its centre, inaugurated in 1899, and the building housing the Metropolitan City, built between 1872 and 1876 to a design by Sironi and Borgnini; next to it, piazza Castello.
  • «G. A. Sanna» Museum: a large archaeological collection documenting Sardinian civilisation from prehistory.
  • Monte d'Accoddi: a pre-Nuragic altar on a plain not far from the sea; the first sacred building, the «Red Temple», dates from the second half of the 4th millennium BC, and the truncated-pyramid structure with its ramp recalls Mesopotamian ziggurats.

Rete Thamus

The Comune groups eleven sites in the Rete Thamus: Palazzo di Città, the Stanze del Duca, Palazzo Ducale, the Cantine del Duca, Palazzo d'Usini, Palazzo dell'Insinuazione, Palazzo Infermeria San Pietro, the Rosello Fountain, Monte d'Accoddi, the Domus de Janas of Montalè and the Barbican of the Aragonese Castle. Opening hours and tickets are available from the Comune's Culture, Tourism and Major Events department; the official municipal tourism site is turismosassari.it.

Sea: Platamona

Platamona beach is a 10-kilometre stretch of sand. In season there are lifeguards, showers, wooden walkways for wheelchairs and pushchairs, shaded areas and a free assisted bathing service; there is a free car park along via della Torre and a free shuttle leaves every 20 minutes from the via Stefanelli car park.
