Overview

In short

Catanzaro is the capital of the Calabria Region and seat of its Executive, while the Regional Council sits in Reggio Calabria. It is a city of three distinct parts: the historic centre, perched on a hill at about 300 metres between two torrents, with Corso Mazzini and the offices; Catanzaro Lido (or Marina), the seaside district on the Ionian with the main station and the promenade; and Germaneto, in the plain between the two, where over the past twenty years the regional Cittadella, the Magna Graecia University campus and the university hospital have been built.

The economy is service-based: regional and state administration, health care (the Renato Dulbecco university hospital), university, courts, retail. Industry is almost absent; tourism concerns the coast in summer.

  • Historic centre: Corso Mazzini, cathedral, offices, theatre; steep streets, stairs, funicular.
  • Hill districts (Pontepiccolo, Santa Maria, Gagliano, Siano): residential, apartment blocks, car needed.
  • Catanzaro Lido: sea, promenade, Trenitalia station, families and summer rentals.
  • Germaneto: regional Cittadella, university campus, hospital; recent housing and students.
  • Mater Domini: historic hospital and university area near the centre.
  • Inland and hill hamlets: villages and detached houses, car commuting.

Who it suits and who it does not

It suits those working for the Region, in health care or the justice system, students of medicine, pharmacy, law and economics at UMG, and anyone seeking a quiet city with the sea ten minutes away and the Sila mountains half an hour away. It suits less those looking for skilled private-sector jobs, an intense cultural life or a walkable city: Catanzaro is steep, spread over three nuclei and lived by car.

Seasons and connections

Hot dry summers, tempered at the Lido by the sea; mild but windy and rainy winters on the hill, with snow on the nearby Sila. The airport is at Lamezia Terme, about 35 km away, linked by bus and train; Catanzaro Lido station is on the Ionian line and has trains to Lamezia, where Intercity and Frecce to Rome stop. The SS280 "dei Due Mari" road links the Lido to the A2 motorway and the Tyrrhenian in half an hour.

Public housing run by ATERP Calabria; university residences by the Fondazione UMG.

  • Daily life

Registry and ID card at the Comune, with a portal to request certificates online. Door-to-door separated collection with a calendar by zone and municipal TARI tax. Mains water from Sorical, drinkable, with summer interruptions in the upper districts. De Nobili municipal library at Villa Trieste; local markets and supermarkets in Germaneto and at the Lido.
