Climate: a windy hill between the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian
The centre sits at about 300 metres on Italy's narrowest isthmus, ten kilometres from the Ionian and thirty from the Tyrrhenian: almost constant wind, rainy mild winters, hot dry summers cooler at sunset than on the coast. High seismic and summer wildfire risk; good air.

The climate in short
Catanzaro stands on the Marcellinara isthmus, the narrowest point of the peninsula, where on clear days both seas can be seen from the hill: wind is the dominant feature of the climate, with westerly and northerly currents crossing the isthmus and making the centre cooler and drier than the Lido. Winters are mild but among the wettest of the southern capitals (see rain days), with rare snow on the hill; summers are hot and dry, with the Scirocco bringing heat peaks and the sea cooling the Lido in the evening.
Earthquakes, landslides, wildfires
Calabria is among the regions with the highest seismic hazard and Catanzaro is in zone 1; buildings in the centre are largely old or post-war. The torrents that cut the hill (Fiumarella, Musofalo) and the clay slopes cause landslides and slips after intense autumn rain, with road closures. From June to September wildfire risk is high on the hills and in the Presila; the Sila, half an hour away, has snowy winters and cool summers.
Water and air
Bulk water is supplied by Sorical, the regional company, and distributed in the city by the Comune; tap water quality is compliant but with occasional interruptions in the upper districts in summer. Air quality is good thanks to the wind and the absence of industry; ARPACAL data record no significant PM10 problems.
