Overview
Territory and cities
Calabria is a narrow, mountainous peninsula: the Pollino to the north, the Sila in the centre (a plateau at 1,200–1,400 m with lakes and forests), the Serre and Aspromonte to the south, with plains only at Sibari, Lamezia and Gioia Tauro. The Tyrrhenian and Ionian coasts together exceed 780 km. Catanzaro is the capital and seat of the regional government, while the regional council sits in Reggio Calabria, the most populous city; Cosenza with Rende (home of the University of Calabria), Lamezia Terme (airport), Crotone and Vibo Valentia are the other towns. The population concentrates on the coasts and in the few plains, while the interior is emptying.
Economy
The economy has the lowest GDP per head in Italy and depends on public administration, retail, agriculture and tourism. Agriculture produces olive oil (second region after Apulia), citrus (clementines of the Sibari plain, bergamot of the Reggio coast, almost all world production), Tropea red onions, liquorice, Cirò wine. The port of Gioia Tauro is Italy's leading container transhipment port. Industry is small; beach tourism (Tropea, Capo Vaticano, the Ionian coast) is highly seasonal. Calabria is part of the ZES unica. The presence of organised crime is documented in the official reports of the DIA and affects public contracts and the local economy.
Who moves here
People moving to Calabria are often students at the University of Calabria (one of the few residential campuses in Italy), seasonal tourism or farm workers (in the Gioia Tauro plain and at Sibari many are foreign, with critical housing conditions documented by the authorities), civil servants or returning emigrants. Some inland municipalities offer incentives for new residents. The share of foreign residents is below the national average; the region has one of the country's highest rates of youth emigration.
