Structure

Fewer than half of Calabrians aged 15 to 64 are in work: the region has Italy's lowest employment rate, unemployment roughly double the national average and even worse female and youth rates. Undeclared work is widespread in agriculture, construction, retail and personal services. Public administration (Region, health service, schools, local authorities) is the main stable employer, followed by retail, tourism and agriculture. Industry is limited to the port and logistics of Gioia Tauro, a few agri-food and engineering firms and call centres (Catanzaro, Crotone, Rende).

Seasonality and hubs

Seasonal work concentrates between June and September on the coasts (Tropea and the Costa degli Dei, Soverato, Isola di Capo Rizzuto, Scilla, Diamante) and between November and March in the citrus harvest in the Gioia Tauro plain and at Sibari, where thousands of foreign farm labourers work in often precarious housing (the San Ferdinando tent camp is the object of institutional plans for its closure). The University of Calabria in Rende is a skilled employment hub, as are the Grande Ospedale Metropolitano in Reggio and the Catanzaro university hospital.

Services and incentives

Job centres report to the Calabria Region (Labour Department), which publishes vacancies and training calls and runs the GOL programme; public hiring procedures make up a significant share of opportunities. ISTAT and SVIMEZ (a research association, not an official source) document for Calabria one of the country's highest emigration rates, with a very high share of graduates working outside the region. Businesses that invest can access the ZES unica tax credit and the single authorisation; conditions change with each budget law.
