Studying

Three state universities: University of Calabria at Arcavacata di Rende (residential campus, the largest), Magna Graecia in Catanzaro, Mediterranea in Reggio Calabria, plus the Dante Alighieri University for Foreigners in Reggio. There is no single regional student-support agency: grants and housing are run by the universities with regional funds.

Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria – architecture, engineering, agriculture, law and economics
Università per Stranieri Dante Alighieri – Reggio Calabria, non-state; social work, psychology, social policy and Italian language and culture courses for foreigners

Student support and housing

Calabria is the only large region without a regional student-support agency: regional law 34/2001 assigns the functions to the individual universities, which issue calls for grants, housing places and canteens using regional and state funds. Unical has its Centro Residenziale with thousands of beds on the Arcavacata campus, a unique situation in Italy; in Catanzaro and Reggio the supply of residences is smaller and students rent rooms in town at low prices. Many Calabrians study outside the region (Rome, Bologna, Pisa, Messina).

International programmes

English-taught programmes are limited to some master's degrees at Unical (engineering, computer science, economics) and the Mediterranea; the Dante Alighieri University for Foreigners runs Italian courses for foreigners. The Ministry's Universitaly portal lists courses and procedures for international students.
