What people eat
The city dish is morzello (u morzeddhu), a stew of veal offal slow-cooked with tomato, chilli and oregano and served in pitta, the local ring-shaped bread: it is eaten standing in the "putiche" of the centre, traditionally on Saturdays. Around it there is Calabrian cooking of chilli and 'nduja, homemade pasta (fileja, maccarruni), soppressata, Monte Poro pecorino, swordfish and tuna from the Ionian, Christmas sweets (turdilli, pitta 'mpigliata). Wines come from Cirò, Lamezia and the Savuto valley; bergamot and liquorice are the regional flavours.
- Mediterranean Biodiversity Park: the Province's large urban park with ponds, sculptures, military museum; free.
- Villa Trieste and the belvedere over the Bisantis Bridge; the San Giovanni gardens.
- Catanzaro Lido promenade: walking, cycling, free beach and equipped lidos.
- Sila: trails, lakes, skiing at Lorica and Camigliatello; Villaggio Mancuso an hour away.
- Nicola Ceravolo stadium: US Catanzaro matches, one of the South's most passionate crowds.
- Teatro Politeama and Teatro Comunale: drama, music and dance from October to May.
Evenings and sport
Evening life changes with the seasons: in summer it concentrates at the Lido, between the promenade, lidos and beach bars; in winter in the centre, along Corso Mazzini and its side streets, with bars and pubs frequented by students and professionals, which close early compared with big cities. Grassroots sport is good: municipal pool, gyms and pitches, sailing and surfing at the Lido, football and basketball in local clubs, hiking and mountain biking in the Presila.
