Buses and funicular

The Azienda per la Mobilità della Città di Catanzaro (AMC), the Comune's company, runs 42 urban bus lines linking the centre, the hill districts, Germaneto and the Lido, the paid parking lots and two cable systems: the funicular, which since 1998 has climbed the hill from Catanzaro Sala to Piazza Roma with an intermediate stop at Piano Casa, running every 15 minutes (AMC presents it as the only active funicular in the South apart from Naples), and a panoramic lift. The funicular was closed in 2014 because of the state of the installation and reopened in November 2016 after works. The ticket is integrated with buses; evening and Sunday frequencies are reduced.

Trains and regional coaches

The main station is Catanzaro Lido, on Trenitalia's Ionian line (Reggio Calabria–Crotone–Sibari–Taranto) and terminus of regional trains to Lamezia Terme Centrale, where Intercity and Frecce to Naples, Rome and the North stop. Ferrovie della Calabria runs the narrow-gauge railway between Catanzaro Città (station in the centre, near Piazza Matteotti) and the Lido, with stops at Germaneto, and the coach services to the province and the Sila. Regional coaches link Catanzaro to Cosenza, Reggio Calabria, Lamezia and, on long routes, to Naples and Rome.

Airport, roads, ZTL

Lamezia Terme international airport, managed by SACAL, is Calabria's main airport, about 35 km away: it is reached by car along the SS280 in half an hour, by train from Catanzaro Lido to Lamezia Terme Centrale and then by shuttle to the terminal, or by direct coach. The SS280 "dei Due Mari" links the Lido to the A2 motorway at Lamezia; the SS106 Jonica runs along the coast. Corso Mazzini is pedestrian and the historic centre has limited-traffic areas; paid parking is managed by AMC. In practice Catanzaro is lived by car, with traffic concentrated on Viale dei Normanni and the bridges to the hill.
