Overview
Geography and cities
Tuscany runs from the Apennines and the Apuan Alps (Carrara marble) to the hills of Chianti, the Siena area and Val d'Orcia, to the Maremma and the coast with its Archipelago (Elba, Giglio, Capraia). Florence is the capital and largest city; Prato, a few kilometres away, is the textile hub; Pisa and Livorno form the coastal area with port and airport; Lucca, Pistoia, Arezzo, Siena, Grosseto and Massa complete the provincial capitals. The inland hills are sparsely populated.
Economy
The economy combines quality manufacturing (leather goods and fashion in Florence and Scandicci, textiles in Prato, paper in Lucca, marble in Carrara, goldsmithing in Arezzo, pharmaceuticals in Siena and Lucca, geothermal energy at Larderello, yacht building in Viareggio), agriculture (wine, oil) and some of Europe's most important cultural and landscape tourism. Employment is above the national average but below the North.
Who moves here and languages
Newcomers include millions of tourists, foreign students (Florence hosts dozens of US university programmes), foreign retirees in the Chianti and Val d'Orcia countryside, textile workers in Prato (home to one of Europe's largest Chinese communities) and farm workers. Ordinary-statute region, official language Italian, of which Florentine is the historical basis; no recognised linguistic minority.
