Overview
What kind of city
Lucca is a provincial capital in north-western Tuscany. The historic centre is entirely enclosed by a 4.2-kilometre ring of walls built between the mid-16th and mid-17th centuries: the municipal tourism portal describes it as an elevated promenade and a green ring where people walk, run, and which hosts concerts, exhibitions and sporting events.
The centre
Inside the walls, Piazza Anfiteatro sits on the outline of a Roman amphitheatre of the 1st or 2nd century AD; the Guinigi Tower, 45 metres high, carries a hanging garden of holm oaks on top. The city hosts the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, an advanced-training institute with a campus in the San Francesco complex.
