Organisation
Since 2016 Tuscany has merged its twelve former ASLs into three wide-area Aziende USL: Toscana Centro (Florence, Prato, Pistoia, Empoli), Toscana Nord Ovest (Pisa, Livorno, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Viareggio) and Toscana Sud Est (Siena, Arezzo, Grosseto). The university hospital trusts are Careggi and Meyer (children's) in Florence, Pisa and Siena; ESTAR handles procurement and recruitment for the whole system. GP choice is made online with SPID/CIE or at district desks.
Booking, app, co-payments
Bookings go through the CUP (regional number, desks, pharmacies) and the Toscana Salute app, which also gives access to the Electronic Health Record, prescriptions, reports and co-payment; the regional portal explains consent and delegations. Tuscany has an income-banded co-payment system and its own regional exemptions (for example for the unemployed and workers on furlough), to be checked each year. Health Houses and Community Houses are widespread across the territory.
Mountains and islands
In the Apennines, the Apuan Alps (quarries and caves) and on Monte Amiata rescue is provided by the Tuscan Alpine and Cave Rescue with the regional Pegaso helicopter service (bases in Florence, Grosseto and Massa): call 112. On the islands the service is provided by local posts and helicopter rescue.
