Overview
Where and what
Prato lies on the plain north-west of Florence, crossed by the Bisenzio river. The municipality's tourism portal presents it as Tuscany's second city; it is the capital of a province that also includes Montemurlo, Poggio a Caiano, Carmignano, Vaiano, Vernio and Cantagallo.
The walled historic centre holds the Cathedral of Santo Stefano with Donatello's outdoor pulpit and frescoes by Filippo Lippi, the Palazzo Pretorio, the church of San Francesco with the tombstone of the merchant Francesco di Marco Datini, and the Emperor's Castle beside the basilica of Santa Maria delle Carceri.
Economy and people
Prato is a textile city: recycled wool, made by reusing scraps and rags, built the district's fortune from the nineteenth century. Alongside the wool mills and spinning plants the garment sector has grown, now the province's largest export item, with thousands of foreign-owned firms, mostly Chinese and working in fashion. The Chinese community is by far the largest foreign community in the city, followed by the Albanian, Pakistani and Romanian ones.
Those who move here find a manufacturing economy with an employment rate above the Tuscan and national averages, but exposed to textile downturns and to the decisions of the big fashion brands that place the orders.
