Climate and environment: air within limits, the Bisenzio and the 2023 flood
Prato's two ARPAT monitoring stations stayed within legal limits for PM10, PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide in 2023 and 2024. The main risk is flooding: the flood that began on 2 November 2023 hit the province and halted many industrial areas for weeks.

Air
ARPAT measures air quality in Prato with two stations, PO-Roma and PO-Ferrucci. According to the 2025 Environmental Data Yearbook, in 2023 and 2024 both met the legal limits for PM10 (annual mean and number of days above the daily threshold), PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide; PO-Roma records somewhat higher particulate levels than PO-Ferrucci. Benzene and metals in PM10 were also below their limit or target values.
Water and floods
The Bisenzio, which crosses the city, is classified by ARPAT in its middle stretch at Prato as having poor ecological status and not-good chemical status. From 2 November 2023 Tuscany was hit by exceptional weather events with floods, inundations and landslides: the national state of emergency also covered the province of Prato, and the Pistoia-Prato Chamber of Commerce opened grant calls for damaged businesses. Those looking for a home or a workshop can check the flood hazard of the area in the municipal planning documents.
