Overview
What kind of city
The national tourism portal describes Massa as a city of early-medieval origin: the medieval part below the castle, the Renaissance part on the plain around the large Piazza Aranci, from which wide straight streets radiate. The city then grew toward the sea until it joined Marina di Massa and its beach establishments.
The Apuan Alps and culture
Behind the city are the Apuan Alps, with the Regional Park and its visitor centre in via Simon Musico; some areas are left outside protection so that the marble quarries, essential to the economy, can keep working. The municipal site highlights the Teatro Guglielmi and Villa della Rinchiostra among its places.
