What the province produces

According to the Toscana Nord-Ovest Chamber of Commerce, in 2025 the province of Massa-Carrara exported 3.163 billion euro (+50.4%), a result tied to the cycle of large orders. Machinery is the dominant sector: general-purpose machines exceeded one billion, over 32% of the total, and other general-purpose machines rose to 583 million; boatbuilding more than doubled its sales, to 445 million. The stone sector is declining, both worked stone (394 million, -6.4%) and raw stone. The United States is the first market.

Firms and skills

In 2025 the number of firms in the province fell by 0.1%, but the Massa-Carrara area ended with a positive balance thanks to the municipality of Massa (+1.0%), which offset declines in Carrara and Montignoso. The Chamber reports that in the province the difficulty of finding information engineers reached 76%; this led to the first university degree course in the Apuan area, the University of Pisa's bachelor's in Digital Technologies Engineering, taught in Carrara.
