Statute and languages
Tuscany is an ordinary-statute region. The official language is Italian, whose historical basis is literary Florentine; the Tuscan varieties are not minority dialects and there are no communities protected by law 482/1999. The Region has a tradition of strong public intervention in health, social services and landscape planning (regional landscape plan).
Holidays
30 November is the Festa della Toscana, established to commemorate the Grand Duchy's abolition of the death penalty and torture in 1786 (the first in the world): it is not a public holiday but the Region organises events. Patron saints: St John the Baptist in Florence (24 June, with the historic football match and fireworks), St Ranieri in Pisa (17 June, with the Luminara on the 16th), St Paulinus in Lucca (12 July), St Donatus in Arezzo (7 August). The Palio di Siena is run on 2 July and 16 August.
