Overview

Territory and cities

The Marche stretch from the Apennine ridge (Monti Sibillini, Monte Vettore) to the Adriatic coast, with an almost entirely hilly territory arranged in parallel valleys. The capital is Ancona, home to the regional port and airport; the other main towns are Pesaro, Fano, Ascoli Piceno, Macerata, Fermo and Urbino. No city exceeds one hundred thousand inhabitants and the population is spread across many small and medium-sized municipalities.

Economy

The economy is among the most manufacturing-based in Italy, organised in districts: footwear and leather goods around Fermo and Macerata, furniture and kitchens around Pesaro, household appliances and cooker hoods around Fabriano, paper in Fabriano, musical instruments in Castelfidardo, yacht building in Ancona and Fano, pharmaceuticals in Ancona. The port of Ancona is the main Adriatic hub for ferries to Croatia, Greece and Albania. With law 171/2025 the Marche were brought into the ZES unica, previously limited to the South.

Who moves here

People move to the Marche mainly to work in the industrial districts, to study at the four universities (Ancona, Macerata, Camerino, Urbino) or to settle in the inland villages, where property prices remain moderate. The region has a share of foreign residents close to the national average and one of the oldest populations in Italy. The Apennine interior is still going through reconstruction after the 2016–2017 seismic sequence.
