Health care

Since 2023 the Marche health service is organised in five territorial health authorities (AST, one per province) plus the Marche university hospital trust and INRCA. The region is not under a recovery plan and was rated compliant in the 2023 LEA monitoring.

Organisation

Regional law 19/2022 dissolved the single ASUR and created five Aziende Sanitarie Territoriali: AST Pesaro Urbino (which absorbed the former Marche Nord hospital trust), AST Ancona, AST Macerata, AST Fermo and AST Ascoli Piceno. Two bodies remain separate: the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria delle Marche (Torrette hospital in Ancona, with the Salesi children's hospital) and INRCA, the national research institute on ageing based in Ancona. The Region's health portal gathers AST services, the electronic health record and the regional booking centre (CUP).

Quality and weak points

The Marche have never been placed under a recovery plan and in the monitoring of essential care levels (LEA) for 2023, under the Ministry of Health's Nuovo Sistema di Garanzia, they are among the compliant regions. Documented weak points are waiting lists for specialist care, a shortage of GPs in some inland areas and the hospital network of the earthquake-hit interior (Camerino, Amandola), where the Region has planned new hospitals for disadvantaged areas. Some patients from the Pesaro area use facilities in neighbouring Emilia-Romagna.
