Art towns and sites

The only UNESCO site is the historic centre of Urbino, the Renaissance city of Federico da Montefeltro's Palazzo Ducale. Other much-visited art towns: Ascoli Piceno with its travertine centre and Piazza del Popolo, Loreto with the basilica of the Holy House, Recanati (Leopardi), Macerata with the Sferisterio, Fabriano (paper and museums), Pesaro (Rossini, Italian Capital of Culture 2024). The Frasassi caves at Genga are among the most visited karst complexes in Italy and are toured with a guide at fixed times.

Coast and parks

The coast alternates sandy beaches (Senigallia, Fano, Civitanova, San Benedetto del Tronto with the Riviera delle Palme) with the rocky stretches of Monte Conero (Portonovo, Mezzavalle, Due Sorelle, reached on foot or by boat). The bathing season runs from June to September with a peak in August, when prices and visitor numbers double. Inland there are the Monti Sibillini National Park (Lago di Pilato, Castelluccio on the Umbrian side, Monte Vettore), the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga park in the Ascoli area and the Conero regional park; many Sibillini villages still bear the marks of the earthquakes and some trails remain closed.

Practical rules

The tourist tax is decided municipality by municipality: Ancona, Pesaro, Senigallia, San Benedetto, Urbino and most coastal resorts apply it, with per-night amounts varying by accommodation category; many small inland municipalities do not. Off season the accommodation offer inland is limited and many places close from November to March.
