Overview

What kind of city

Founded in the 2nd century BC, Vicenza prospered under the Republic of Venice from the early fifteenth to the end of the eighteenth century. Its face is the one drawn by Andrea Palladio (1508–1580), who studied classical Roman architecture and gave rise to a style, Palladianism, that spread to England, the rest of Europe and North America. UNESCO inscribed the city and three villas outside the walls in 1994 and in 1996 extended the site to other villas in several Venetian provinces: in the city there are 23 Palladian buildings.

The Teatro Olimpico, commissioned in 1580 by the Accademia Olimpica and opened on 3 March 1585 with Sophocles' Oedipus the King, is Palladio's last work and is presented by the Civic Museums as the oldest covered theatre in the world.

Economy and study

Vicenza hosts Vicenzaoro, the jewellery fair of Italian Exhibition Group: the January 2026 edition gathered more than 1,300 exhibitors, and the president of the Region called the Veneto the heart of Italian goldsmithing and the Vicenza district an example of quality recognised worldwide. Since the 1999–2000 academic year the University of Verona has taught economics courses in Vicenza, on viale Margherita, within the "Università a Vicenza" project coordinated by the Fondazione Studi Universitari di Vicenza.
