Overview
Geography and cities
Veneto stretches from the Belluno Dolomites (Marmolada, Cortina) to the pre-Alps, the Po and Adige plain and the Adriatic coast with the Venice lagoon and the Po delta. Venice is the capital, but Verona and Padua are economic hubs of equal weight; Vicenza, Treviso, Rovigo and Belluno complete the provincial capitals. The population is spread across a diffuse city of small towns and industrial zones along the Verona–Padua–Venice–Treviso axis.
Economy
The economy is one of Italy's biggest exporters, based on districts of small and medium firms: eyewear (Belluno), sports footwear (Montebelluna) and luxury shoes (Riviera del Brenta), goldsmithing (Vicenza), furniture (Livenza), heating and mechanical engineering (Padua), wine (Prosecco, Valpolicella, Soave) and logistics (Verona). Tourism brings tens of millions of overnight stays between Venice, Garda, the beaches (Jesolo, Bibione, Caorle) and the Dolomites.
Who moves here and languages
Newcomers include industrial and farm workers, students in Padua (one of Italy's largest universities), Venice and Verona, and seasonal workers for the coast and the mountains. An ordinary-statute region that has sought greater autonomy since the 2017 referendum. Besides Italian, the Ladin (Cortina, Livinallongo, Colle Santa Lucia), Cimbrian (Sette Comuni, Giazza) and Friulian (Portogruaro area) minorities are protected; Venetian is recognised as heritage by regional law.
