Overview

Steel city

Terni lies in south-eastern Umbria, between the Nera and Serra rivers. The Region's tourism portal recalls it as the "Italian Manchester": from 1832 its walls were demolished to make room for factories and hydroelectric plants powered by the waters of the Marmore Falls, and since 1884 the city has been tied to steel. The steelworks, today Acciai Speciali Terni of the Arvedi group, produce stainless steel flat products. Second World War bombing profoundly changed the urban fabric.

The city has Roman origins (Interamna Nahars, with a theatre, an amphitheatre and baths) and keeps in the basilica of San Valentino the relics of its patron saint, the protector of lovers.

Who lives here

Those who move here find an economy still shaped by heavy industry, a University of Perugia campus (industrial engineering, medicine, economics) and nature a few kilometres away: the Marmore Falls, Lake Piediluco with the national rowing centre, and the Carsulae archaeological area along the Via Flaminia.
