Overview

Geography and cities

Umbria is the only mainland region without a coast: hills and valleys (Valle Umbra, Upper Tiber valley, Terni basin) between the Umbria-Marche Apennines to the east (Monti Sibillini, Monte Cucco) and Lake Trasimeno to the west. Perugia, the capital, is a medieval hill city with two universities; Terni, in the south, is the industrial city; Foligno is the railway junction; Assisi, Spoleto, Gubbio, Orvieto, Todi and Città di Castello are small historic towns.

Economy

The economy is one of small firms and services: public administration and health care, steel (special steels in Terni), chemicals and agri-food (confectionery in Perugia, oil, Montefalco and Orvieto wines, truffles, cured pork), knitwear and cashmere in the Perugia area, ceramics in Deruta and Gubbio, religious and cultural tourism. Income per head is below the central Italian average and the population is ageing and shrinking.

Who moves here and languages

Newcomers include students at the University of Perugia and the University for Foreigners (the oldest Italian-language school for foreigners), Italian and foreign retirees drawn by house prices in the villages, and foreign workers in agriculture and care; many young Umbrians leave for Rome, Florence and the North. Ordinary-statute region, official language Italian, no recognised linguistic minority.
