Rail
The main railway is the Rome–Ancona line, crossing Umbria from Orte to Terni, Spoleto, Foligno and Fossato di Vico, with regional and Intercity trains; from Foligno the line to Assisi, Perugia and Terontola (on the Florence–Rome line) serves the capital. Perugia is about two and a half hours from Rome and two from Florence by train; Orvieto, on the fast line, is an hour from Rome. The former Ferrovia Centrale Umbra (Sansepolcro–Città di Castello–Perugia–Todi–Terni), transferred to RFI, was long suspended and has reopened only on some sections: check the service status.
Buses and Perugia
Urban and suburban bus transport is entrusted to Busitalia (FS Group) across the whole region, under the single regional agency Umbria TPL e Mobilità, with zone fares; in Perugia the Minimetrò links the Pian di Massiano car park with the historic centre and escalators run through the Rocca Paolina. Busitalia also runs the Trasimeno boat services (Isola Maggiore, Isola Polvese). Outside the main towns services are sparse, especially in the evening and at weekends: a car is almost indispensable.
Airport, roads, cycling
Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi airport (PEG, Sant'Egidio) has a limited but growing number of domestic and international flights; otherwise people use Rome Fiumicino (about two hours by car) and Florence. The E45 (Orte–Perugia–Cesena) and the Perugia–Bettolle link to the A1 are the main roads, with frequent roadworks. Cycle routes: the former Spoleto–Norcia railway (scenic cycle path), Assisi–Spoleto along the Valle Umbra, the Trasimeno loop, the Via di Francesco for pilgrims.
