Overview
What kind of city it is
Salerno is a provincial capital and, according to the ISTAT census, the most populous provincial capital in Campania after Naples. The historic centre, damaged by the 1980 earthquake and later restored, keeps its medieval layout: its main monument is the cathedral (Duomo), commissioned by Robert Guiscard and built between 1080 and 1085, whose crypt holds the remains of Saint Matthew, the city's patron saint. From above, at about 300 metres on Monte Bonadies, Arechi Castle overlooks the city and the gulf.
The port handles containers and is a hub of the Motorways of the Sea for ro-ro traffic; the passenger terminal has the Maritime Station designed by Zaha Hadid, within walking distance of the centre.
Study and calendar
The University of Salerno, which grew out of the university Institute of Education (Magistero) founded in 1944 and became a state university in 1968, is based on the Fisciano campus, while the Medicine classrooms are on the Baronissi campus. The city's tradition of learning goes back to the Salerno Medical School (Scuola Medica Salernitana), presented today by the Virtual Museum in via dei Mercanti.
The city calendar has two main moments: the feast of Saint Matthew on 21 September, with the procession of the saints' statues through the centre, and the Luci d'Artista, light installations that in winter fill the historic centre, corso Vittorio Emanuele, the Villa Comunale and piazza Flavio Gioia (the 2025-26 edition ran from 14 November to 1 February).
