Who covers the city
The city of Salerno corresponds to Health District 66 of ASL Salerno, the authority organised in 13 districts that covers the whole province and is headquartered in the city itself, at via Nizza 146 (switchboard 089 691111). For choosing or changing the GP or paediatrician the ASL points to the primary-care offices of each district: for DS 66 the published number is 089 694256.
Hospital and emergency department
The city hospital is the «San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona – Scuola Medica Salernitana» university hospital trust, at largo Città Ippocrate (switchboard 089 671111). The emergency department is on the ground floor of Building W, reached from the ring road at the «Ospedale» exit, and applies colour-coded triage; for emergencies call 118. The trust also includes the «Santa Maria Incoronata dell'Olmo», «Da Procida», «Gaetano Fucito» and «Costa d'Amalfi» sites. ASL Salerno lists no hospitals of its own in the provincial capital: its hospitals, including the level-I emergency departments of Nocera Inferiore, Eboli-Battipaglia and Vallo della Lucania, are in other towns of the province.
Out-of-hours doctor
The continuity-of-care service (ex guardia medica) runs from 20.00 to 8.00 every day, from 10.00 on Saturday to 8.00 on Monday and from 10.00 on pre-holidays to 8.00 of the day after the holiday. In the city the ASL publishes two locations: via Vernieri (tel. 089 56 47 306) and viale Kennedy in Pastena (tel. 089 98 49 057). The service is free and should be used only for conditions that cannot wait for one's own doctor.
Bookings
The ASL Salerno CUP call centre answers on 089 2875028, from landlines and mobiles, Monday to Friday from 8.30 to 17.30 without a lunch break; bookings are also made at the CUP desks of districts and hospitals, in affiliated pharmacies and online on the regional Sinfonia portal, with a doctor's prescription and the health card. Cancellations must be given at least 48 hours in advance: no-shows without cancellation pay a penalty equal to the co-payment due, even if exempt.
