Catania

A city on the Ionian coast at the foot of Etna, rebuilt in Baroque style after the 1693 earthquake and part of the Val di Noto UNESCO site. It has Sicily's oldest university (1434) and a large STMicroelectronics site for power semiconductors. A metro and a railway around Etna; volcanic ash sometimes closes the airport.

Overview

In short

Catania lies between Etna and the Ionian Sea. Founded by Greek colonists from Naxos in 729–728 BC, it was capital of the Kingdom of Sicily from 1402 to 1416, starting under the Aragonese king Martin I of Sicily. The 1669 Etna eruption and the 1693 earthquake struck it hard: it was rebuilt on the same site, in Baroque style, with the contribution of Giovan Battista Vaccarini, and is one of the eight towns of the UNESCO site "Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto" (2002).

The University of Catania, founded in 1434, is the oldest in Sicily. STMicroelectronics has a manufacturing, research and design site for power semiconductors in the city which, according to the company, employs 5,500 people.

Living at the foot of a volcano

Etna, a UNESCO site since 2013, shows almost continuous eruptive activity from its summit craters. For residents this means ash falling on the streets, with orders temporarily banning bicycles and motorbikes, and closures of Fontanarossa airspace (see Climate). The INGV Etna Observatory, in Piazza Roma, monitors the volcano and publishes data and notices.

Connections

In the city, buses and parking are run by AMTS; the Ferrovia Circumetnea runs the metro and the railway that circles Etna as far as Riposto. Vincenzo Bellini airport at Fontanarossa has a Trenitalia stop linked to the terminal by an AMTS bus and is served by the Alibus line.

Discovering

  • Identity

A Greek colony, Aragonese capital of the Kingdom of Sicily in the early fifteenth century, rebuilt on the same site after 1693. Its symbol is the elephant in Piazza Duomo, "'u Liotru". The feast of Saint Agatha, 3–5 February, with the silver fercolo, the candelore and devotees in the white "sacco", is the most deeply felt moment of the year.

  • Climate & environment

Beyond the Mediterranean coastal climate, the volcano matters: during eruptive phases ash falls on the city, the mayor can ban bicycles and motorbikes and the airport closes. In August 2026 Fontanarossa airspace stayed closed for about six days. In 2024 PM10 limit exceedances were isolated (SNPA).
