Daily life: identity card, drop-off centres, ZTL permits

The electronic identity card is requested by appointment at the Centro Direzionale San Leone or at the Municipi desks and is delivered home by post. The six municipal drop-off centres take sorted waste every day except Sunday; organic waste must be put out on the scheduled days and times. Permits for the ZTL and pedestrian areas are requested online from AMTS.

Identity card

The electronic identity card (CIE) is requested in person at the desk in the Centro Direzionale San Leone or at the desks of the Municipi (district councils) and their service centres, with a compulsory appointment, booked at the desk or on the Comune's online booking portal; without an appointment you are served only if slots are free. The desk closes at 12.30 pm (5 pm on Thursdays). You need a passport photo and the expired card or another identity document; foreign nationals also bring their residence permit. The Ministry of the Interior posts the card to your home within six days; renewal can be requested from 180 days before expiry.

Waste

The city has six municipal drop-off centres where sorted waste can be taken every day except Sunday. For organic waste, pending dedicated waste stations, the drop-off days and times must be respected. In October 2026 the mayor asked holiday-home and B&B operators to equip their lodgings for sorted waste and inform guests, pointing to these properties as one of the sources of waste left in the street outside collection hours.

ZTL and pedestrian areas

Permits for the historic-centre ZTL (limited-traffic zone) and for the pedestrian areas (piazza Bellini, San Giovanni Li Cuti, via Etnea, Mazzini, Castello Ursino-Gammazita-Pardo, Crociferi and Sciuti) are requested online from AMTS, without going to an office; information is available at ztl@amts.ct.it.
