Trastevere
Rione XIII, Municipio Roma I Centro, on the right bank of the Tiber below the Gianicolo hill. A medieval fabric of lanes and squares cut by viale di Trastevere. Heavily visited and busy at night; it suits those who want to walk to the centre and can live with noise, less so those who need quiet or parking.

Overview
Where it is and how it is laid out
Trastevere is Rome's Rione XIII and belongs to Municipio Roma I Centro. It occupies the right bank of the Tiber between the Gianicolo hill and the river, from Porta Settimiana and via della Lungara in the north to Porta Portese in the south. Viale di Trastevere, opened in the late nineteenth century, splits it in two: to the west the more touristic part around piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere and piazza Trilussa, to the east the Santa Cecilia and San Francesco a Ripa area, which is more residential.
The fabric is medieval: narrow streets, often without pavements, three- or four-storey buildings, few large squares. The Gianicolo, with the Fontanone dell'Acqua Paola, closes the rione to the west and is a few minutes' climb on foot.
Who lives here and who it suits
Long-standing residents and families who have lived here for generations share the rione with foreign students (several American university programmes are based here) and a growing share of tourist lets. It suits people who work in the centre and want to move on foot or by tram, and who accept neighbourhood life with all its noise. It suits less well anyone who needs a car every day or wants buildings with lifts and shared services.
Day and night
By day it is still a lived-in district: the piazza San Cosimato market, artisan workshops, schools, the Nuovo Regina Margherita hospital. In the evening, above all from Thursday to Saturday and from spring to autumn, the streets around piazza Trilussa and via della Scala fill with bars and people until late; this is why the city applies a night ZTL here. Tourist pressure is among the highest in Rome and shows in the shops, where restaurants have replaced many neighbourhood stores over the years.
The rione takes its name from the Latin trans Tiberim, was already an Augustan regio, and holds the basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, considered the city's first official Christian place of worship.

Living
- Cost of living
Rome is Italy's second most expensive city for rent after Milan, with the historic centre and adjacent districts clearly pricier than the rest. Public transport, by contrast, is among the cheapest of the large European cities. The gap between zones is very wide: for the same floor area you save by moving along the metro lines.
Rome - Housing
Low historic buildings, almost always without a lift, with damp ground floors and small floor plans. A strong presence of short-term tourist lets reduces the supply for residents. Daytime and night-time Trastevere ZTL; very little parking.
- Daily life
Morning neighbourhood market in piazza San Cosimato, the Porta Portese market on Sundays, small supermarkets and bakeries in the inner streets. Nuovo Regina Margherita hospital and Fatebenefratelli on the Tiber Island. Green space on the Gianicolo, at the Botanical Garden and Villa Sciarra. Nightlife concentrated around piazza Trilussa.

- Safety
112 is the single emergency number; 113, 115 and 118 remain active. Low violent crime, frequent pickpocketing and tourist scams in big cities. Civil Protection weather and seismic alerts and IT-alert messages on mobile phones.
Italy
Arriving and staying
- Entry & residence
Rules depend on who is arriving: EU/EEA/Swiss citizens (no visa, registration with the Comune after three months), non-EU citizens for stays up to 90 days (Schengen rule, type C visa where required) and for long stays (national type D visa and a residence permit within eight working days of arrival).
ItalySensitive - Transport
No metro in the rione. Tram 8 along viale di Trastevere runs to piazza Venezia; tram 3 links Trastevere station with Piramide, the Colosseum and San Lorenzo. Roma Trastevere station (FL1, FL3, FL5) has a direct train to Fiumicino airport. The centre is 15–20 minutes on foot.
- Health
The city is split among three ASLs: Roma 2's districts match municipi IV–IX, Roma 3 covers municipi X, XI and XII plus Fiumicino, and the remaining municipi belong to Roma 1. Besides the big teaching hospitals, the ASLs run local hospitals; choose your GP via Salute Lazio or at your district desk; out-of-hours care on 116117.

Work and study
- Work

- Study
Rome has three large state universities (Sapienza, Tor Vergata, Roma Tre), the sports university (Foro Italico) and many private and pontifical institutions. Student support (grants, housing, canteens) is run by DiSCo Lazio. San Lorenzo is the student district par excellence, next to Sapienza's campus.

- Climate & environment
Mediterranean climate: long, hot, dry summers and mild winters with rain concentrated between October and December. Snow is rare. Air quality is a city issue: exceedances of the daily PM10 limit at some stations and an environmental limited-traffic zone (Fascia Verde) that excludes the oldest vehicles.
Rome - Culture & relationships
A country of strong local identities: dialects still spoken at home, cuisines and festivals that differ from region to region. Formality with 'Lei', rigid meal times, slow paper-based bureaucracy. Non-EU citizens with a long-stay permit sign an integration agreement with credits.
