Overview

Territory and cities

Lazio runs from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Apennines: the flat coast of the Agro Romano and the Pontine plain, the volcanic hills of the Colli Albani and Monti Sabatini with the lakes of Bracciano, Bolsena, Vico and Albano, the hilly Tuscia to the north, the mountainous Rieti area (Terminillo) and Ciociaria to the south-east. Rome is the regional capital and the national capital; the other provincial capitals are Latina, Viterbo, Frosinone and Rieti, all under 130,000 inhabitants. The metropolitan city of Rome holds the large majority of the regional population.

Economy

The regional economy is service-based: public administration, business services, universities and research, tourism, audiovisual (Cinecittà), telecommunications and international organisations (FAO, IFAD, WFP and the embassies). Outside Rome the main weights are the pharmaceutical industry along the Pomezia–Latina–Anagni–Frosinone axis (one of Italy's main export hubs in the sector), aerospace (Colleferro, Frascati with ESA-ESRIN, Tiburtina), agriculture in the Pontine plain and the port of Civitavecchia. Lazio is not part of the ZES unica.

Who moves here

People moving to Lazio almost always head for Rome and its hinterland: civil servants, staff of international organisations and embassies, students at the three large public universities, tourism and service workers. The provinces offer much lower housing costs, long commutes (Latina, Frosinone and Viterbo are 60–100 km from the centre) and a more fragile local economy, especially in the Rieti area and inland Ciociaria.
