Overview

For neighbourhoods we only show dedicated figures; otherwise we point to the city page.

Where it is and how it is run

Florence is divided into five Quartieri: Q1 Centro Storico, Q2 Campo di Marte, Q3 Gavinana-Galluzzo, Q4 Isolotto-Legnaia and Q5 Rifredi. The Oltrarno belongs to Quartiere 1, which runs activities and events there: in piazza Santo Spirito, at the Nidiaci youth centre and on via del Leone, which the Quartiere presents as a «street of encounter and welcome». Quartiere 1's offices are on the other bank, at piazza Santa Croce 1.

Inside the UNESCO site

The Historic Centre of Florence has been on the World Heritage List since 1982. Its boundary follows the remains of the fourteenth-century walls, with gates, towers and the two Medici fortresses, including the Fort of San Giorgio del Belvedere in the hills to the south. In the Oltrarno the UNESCO entry names Palazzo Pitti, the Boboli Gardens and the church of Santo Spirito.

Among the threats to the site UNESCO lists mass tourism, traffic pollution, a falling number of residents and flood risk. Since 2025 the Comune has not allowed new units in the UNESCO historic core to be used as short-term tourist lets (see the housing entry).
