Overview
What kind of city
Como is a provincial capital on the shore of the lake that bears its name. The tourist portal recalls Alessandro Volta, inventor of the battery, born in the city in 1745; the Tempio Voltiano, one of the four civic museums, opened on 16 July 1928 to house the scientist's instruments, and the Faro Voltiano in Brunate was built in 1927 in his honour.
The centre
The Basilica Cattedrale has a façade the municipality describes as one of the major examples of late Gothic; the Pinacoteca civica is in the seventeenth-century Palazzo Volpi. Students and workers will find a campus of the Università dell'Insubria in the city, which also has sites in Varese and Busto Arsizio.
A silk territory
The Lario economy has long been tied to textiles: the Chamber of Commerce describes the Serico Comasco district, 88 municipalities, whose core activity is weaving silk yarn.
