Overview
Territory and cities
Molise has been a separate region since 1963, when it was separated from Abruzzo; with just over 4,400 km² and fewer than 300,000 inhabitants it is Italy's second-smallest and least populated region after Valle d'Aosta. The territory is almost entirely hilly and mountainous (Matese, Mainarde, Alto Molise), with 35 km of Adriatic coast around Termoli. The capital Campobasso (about 700 m altitude) and Isernia are the two provincial capitals; Termoli, Venafro, Bojano and Agnone are the other towns. No municipality exceeds 50,000 inhabitants.
Economy and demography
The economy depends heavily on public administration, health care and the university. Industry concentrates in the Termoli industrial area (Stellantis engine and gearbox plant, where the planned battery gigafactory has been suspended) and in the Venafro-Pozzilli, Bojano and Campobasso areas (La Molisana pasta, olive oil, dairy, mineral water). Agriculture is small-scale: wheat, oil, wine (Tintilia), truffles in Alto Molise. Molise is part of the ZES unica for the South. Depopulation is among the fastest in Italy: many inland municipalities have fewer than 500 inhabitants and a very high average age.
Who moves here
Few people move to Molise from outside: those who do are civil servants and health workers, teachers and students at the University of Molise, workers at the Termoli plant, families returning from emigration and some remote workers attracted by very low housing costs. The region has a share of foreign residents below the national average, concentrated in Campobasso, Termoli and Venafro. Newcomers must reckon with the lack of an airport, slow railways and shrinking services outside the main towns.
