Organisation
Molise has a single regional health authority, ASReM, which runs the three public hospitals (Cardarelli in Campobasso, Veneziale in Isernia, San Timoteo in Termoli), the Agnone facility and community services. Two accredited private institutions play a major role: the IRCCS Neuromed in Pozzilli (neurosciences) and Gemelli Molise in Campobasso (former Università Cattolica hospital, oncology and cardiac surgery). Bookings go through ASReM's regional CUP and the electronic health record.
Recovery plan and weak points
Molise's health service has been under a deficit recovery plan since 2007 and has been run by a government-appointed commissioner ad acta since 2009, with a succession of operational programmes that cut beds and maternity units (closed in Isernia and Termoli at times). In the monitoring of essential care levels (LEA) for 2023 (Nuovo Sistema di Garanzia) the region is non-compliant in one area. Molise has one of the highest shares in Italy of hospital admissions outside the region (outbound mobility), to Lazio, Abruzzo, Campania and Emilia-Romagna, especially for oncology, cardiac surgery and orthopaedics.
Inland areas
For residents of Alto Molise or the Matese the nearest hospital can be over an hour away; the regional air ambulance and agreements with neighbouring regions cover emergencies. The shortage of GPs and paediatricians is documented by the Region in many municipalities, where care is provided on a rota. Anyone moving in should first check that a GP is available in their municipality.
