San Salvario
A district of Circoscrizione 8 enclosed by via Nizza and corsi Massimo d'Azeglio, Vittorio Emanuele II and Bramante, which grew from the mid-19th century with Porta Nuova station. Overview
Where it is and where it comes from
San Salvario belongs to Circoscrizione 8 together with Cavoretto, Borgo Po, Nizza Millefonti, Lingotto and Filadelfia; the circoscrizione's offices are at via Campana 32. The district occupies the quadrilateral between via Nizza and corsi Massimo d'Azeglio, Vittorio Emanuele II and Bramante.
The name comes from the church of San Salvatore in Campagna, built between 1646 and 1653 by Amedeo di Castellamonte for Madama Reale Christine of France. The district took shape from the mid-19th century, helped by the growth of Porta Nuova station. In 1856 the Valentino became a public garden, and in 1911 it hosted the International Exhibition of Industry and Labour, for the fiftieth anniversary of Italian unification.
Communities, market, workshops
Between 1853 and 1884 two religious communities settled here: the Waldensians built their temple on today's corso Vittorio Emanuele II, the Jewish community its synagogue between via Sant'Anselmo and via Galliari. In 1876 the market moved from piazza Bodoni to piazza Madama Cristina and soon became the city's second market.
In the early 20th century San Salvario was the "car district": Giovanni Battista Ceirano opened a bicycle workshop on corso Vittorio Emanuele II in 1888, and the Welleyes came out of the Ceirano workshops in 1899. In the 1910s the car makers moved to other parts of the city and the district filled with shops, warehouses and craft workshops.
The district today
From the early 1990s the share of immigrant residents grew, with social tensions that were at times severe; the city libraries now describe a multicultural district focused on coexistence, with associations, workshops, shops and cultural events.
The district has the neo-Gothic church of the Sacro Cuore di Maria, designed by Carlo Ceppi in 1898 and rebuilt in the 1950s after bomb damage. The Valentino park, which Turismo Torino describes as the city's oldest and best-known public park, holds the Borgo Medievale, a reconstruction built for the 1884 Italian General Exhibition.
