Overview

What kind of city

According to the municipality, ancient Drepanon grew around its port, between the sea and Mount Erice: a Sicanian village, then a small fortified town, a Phoenician trading post, then an Arab and Norman city. Under Bourbon rule seafaring, salt works and tuna fisheries were among the pillars of the economy. In the Second World War the San Pietro quarter, the oldest, was destroyed by bombing.

What newcomers find

The municipality has a single switchboard and a freephone number, online booking of appointments and a portal for reports. In municipal and ASP documents the comune of Misiliscemi appears alongside Trapani. The city hosts a local campus of the University of Palermo; Trapani-Birgi airport links western Sicily with Lampedusa, Pantelleria and several Italian and European cities.
