Overview
What kind of city
Pavia is a provincial capital on the river Ticino. The tourist portal recalls that it was capital of the Lombard Kingdom and then of the Kingdom of Italy: the Basilica di San Michele Maggiore saw the coronation of the kings of Italy, up to Frederick Barbarossa on 17 April 1155.

According to its own site, the Università di Pavia is the oldest university in Lombardy: Lothair's capitulary of 825 set up the school of rhetoric and the Studium Generale was founded by Charles IV in 1361. Today it has sites in Pavia and Cremona, almost 24,000 enrolled students and 18 university colleges.
The centre and surroundings
The city's symbol is the Ponte Coperto over the Ticino, linking the old town to Borgo Ticino. A few kilometres away stands the Certosa di Pavia, begun in 1396.
