Overview
What kind of city
The Cathedral, the basilica of San Giovanni Battista, dates back to the 6th century; tradition credits its foundation to the Lombard queen Theodelinda, whose chapel holds the Iron Crown. The neoclassical Royal Villa was designed by Giuseppe Piermarini for Archduke Ferdinand of Habsburg and later became the residence of Eugène de Beauharnais and of the Savoy kings. The Parco di Monza, established in 1805 by Napoleon's will, is among the largest walled parks in Europe and contains the national racing circuit, built in 1922.
The city is organised into ten neighbourhood Civic Centres, reference points for services and participation.
Connections
Monza's urban services and the intercity lines of the province of Monza e Brianza belong to the Integrated Fare System of the Milan mobility area (STIBM): a single ticket is valid on buses, trams, the metro and trains within the area, priced by the number of rings crossed. For people working or studying in Milan, Monza is therefore part of the same fare network.
