Neighbourhoods

The ten Civic Centres are the neighbourhoods' reference points for listening, meeting and services: Centro – San Gerardo, San Carlo – San Giuseppe, Libertà, Sant'Albino, Cederna Cantalupo, Regina Pacis – San Donato, San Rocco, Triante, San Fruttuoso and San Biagio – Cazzaniga. They host courses, neighbourhood URP desks and collaboration pacts between residents and the Comune.

Theodelinda and the medieval Comune

Tradition credits the foundation of Monza's basilica to Theodelinda, a Bavarian princess who became queen of the Lombards. The Iron Crown, kept in her chapel, is traditionally linked to a nail of the Cross and was used to crown the kings of Italy; recent studies point to a late-antique royal insignia. The Arengario, the former town hall from the late 13th century on piazza Roma, had the assembly hall on its first floor and the «parlera», the small balcony from which the Comune's decrees were read out.

The Royal Villa

The Royal Villa was commissioned in 1777 from the imperial architect Giuseppe Piermarini and completed in three years for Archduke Ferdinand of Habsburg. After Napoleon it was the summer residence of Viceroy Eugène de Beauharnais and later the favourite home of Umberto I of Savoy, killed in Monza by the anarchist Gaetano Bresci on 29 July 1900. In 1934 Victor Emmanuel III gave it to the Comuni of Monza and Milan.
