Overview

What kind of city

Lecce is a provincial capital whose historic buildings, according to the regional tourism guide, were built in a style that took the name "barocco leccese" under Spanish rule, using golden-toned pietra leccese limestone. The centre revolves around piazza del Duomo, a "closed square" with the cathedral, bell tower and bishop's palace, and piazza Sant'Oronzo.

A university in the centre

The Università del Salento, which has promoted learning since 1955 (the year of the University Consortium) and took its current name in 2006, has nine departments and its main campus in Lecce, plus a site in Brindisi; the university's website mentions more than forty research centres in the area.
